March 2026

General Updates

  • Refreshed Website: We're excited to announce the official launch of the new Neuromatch website! After an early preview period with community feedback, the site is now live at  neuromatch.io . Thank you to everyone who shared input; your feedback helped shape the final result. You can still  log your feedback and suggestions here .
  • 2025 Impact Report: We're happy to also launch to share our  2025 Impact Report!  Take a look at the incredible stories and stats that showcase what our community has built together. We also have a  dedicated impact page  on the new website where you can explore both the numbers and the stories behind of impact. We love to let our community shine. Would you like to share your story?  Fill out this form to be featured.
  • AISS Program Launch: Applications are now open for the  AI Sentience Scholars program , a 6-month, part-time, fully remote mentored research program for early-career researchers (Master's to early postdoc). The program brings together researchers working at the intersection of AI, consciousness, and society, combining mentored research projects, workshops, seminars, an in-person convening, publication opportunities, and a stipend with research funding. We're hosting a  1 April webinar  for anyone that wants to learn more or wants to apply.
  • COSYNE 2026: Neuromatch had a booth at  COSYNE  in Lisbon from 12–15 March. The conference was a key opportunity to connect with people specifically interested in computational neuroscience and strengthen partner relationships. We had a community meet-up and it was great to see Impact Scholars, Content Creators, and others from our global community.

Academy Updates

  • Applications for 2026 Academy have closed! You can see our full year-over-year application trends in our  Academy Internal Report .
  • Computational Neuroscience: Students: 1,897, TAs: 247
  • Deep Learning: Students: 745, TAs: 190
  • NeuroAI: Students: 532, TAs: 61
  • Computational Tools for Climate Science: Students: 408, TAs: 58
  • Student and TA offers will go out in mid-April, and individuals will have until the 10 May to accept offers and enrol in the 2026 Academy.
  • Update on OFAC licence for Students/TAs in Iran: Our OFAC license for Iran expires on 30 April 2026. Our legal counsel has submitted a renewal application which is under active review by the US federal government. Some correspondence this month via our legal team indicates we may hear an outcome on the application shortly. However, we are still exploring additional ways to support students and TAs in Iran this year – you can follow the discussion in #a-26-regional-tech.
  • Professional Development: Angelo and Rana has been working on planning several seminars and panels during June, as well as finalizing the new Professional Development mentor structure for this year (reminder that we are not doing Project Mentors this year, you can see that decision process in #a-26-mentors on Slack).
  • Instructions: TA reviews are underway with a due date of 1 April. A huge thank you to the many new volunteers who joined our TA Selection Committee this year to make the review process smoother. Kirollus and Nicholas has been brainstorming some new ideas for the instruction department, and we will start updating the TA training with a focus on facilitating learning and online engagement.
  • Student Experience: Ashar has already been thinking about fun ways to engage students during the Academy. Orientation timeslots have been confirmed and we will start reviewing Orientation slides soon. We will be able to offer small prizes (gift cards to our merch shop) for the contests this year!
  • Comms: Comms did the heavy lifting during our application season! Huge thank you to Muriah for drafting emails, scheduling social media, and replying to so many questions via our social platforms. Thank you too to Aparajeeta and Farbod for helping create our new  Academy Registration Toolkit  and all the comms support.
  • Ambassadors: A huge thank you to all our Ambassadors for so much help during the application season!! They helped spread the word and talk one-on-one to interested students and TAs.
  • Tech: Ole has been helping Konstantine with the book building process and Sandra has been creating some new features in the Portal. Konstantine has also been working behind the scenes on some big updates for our course booking including building new parallelized processing and moving our content to Jupyter Book 2.
  • Comp Neuroscience: Richard is leading an excited team to create a whole new day of content for our Comp Neuro course focused on time series analysis and signal processing. For projects, we've been reviewing our current projects to make sure things are working (big thanks to Sam and Aparajeeta). In addition, Kate and Marius have been doing lots of exploring of the BRAIN datasets to integrate into the course for the grant that we received. Right now the plan is to do an open call to folks who have datasets funded by the BRAIN Initiative to integrate for 2027.
  • Deep Learning: We welcomed Jiaxin (Cindy) Tu as our new DL Curriculum Specialist! Cindy will be supporting cleaning up the material in general to get the DL course running more smoothly. Joseph, Mobin, and Chathura have been working on creating a new project template for the NLP project. We are also exploring the decision to fully move the DL course to JAX (instead of PyTorch). Do you have thoughts on this? Share in #a-26-dl-curriculum.
  • NeuroAI: Eva, Divyansha, and Sergey has all been working to get our NeuroAI projects back working and updated based on student feedback.
  • Computational Tools for Climate Science: We've had two meetings about future homes for CMA, with  WCRP  and with  MIT OpenCourseWare . MIT OCW is actively working on copying all of our CMA static content over to their platform! We will continue looking for additional homes for the content.

Financial Snapshot

  • Financial Runway: As of 30 March 2026, Neuromatch Inc. held $ 1,049,017 in the bank. Based on current projections, and not accounting for pending or future fundraising, Neuromatch will exhaust available and committed funds in November 2027. This provides a conservative financial runway of approximately 19 months.
  • 2025 Financial Audit: We have commenced our 2025 fiscal year financial audit — Neuromatch's second annual audit. Building on the improvements implemented from last year's auditor recommendations, we are confident this will be a smooth and efficient process. For 2025, we are reporting an estimated total income of $2,750,000, up from $1,100,000 in 2024.

Fundraising

  • Longview Philanthropy: We received a $60,000 supplemental grant from Longview Philanthropy to support an in-person convening for the AI Sentience Scholars program, held alongside the CIFAR Neuroscience of Consciousness Winter School.
  • Wellcome Contract: We are pleased to announce a $540,000 contract (over 24 months) with Wellcome to provide dedicated programme support for the 14 Wellcome-funded teams from the Neuromatch-led MEXA Generative AI for Mental Health Research Accelerator.
  • Dana Foundation Pilot Proposals: Following invitations to submit full proposals after our Letters of Intent, we have submitted two proposals to the Dana Foundation to pilot two new programs:
  • NeuroAI & Society ($180,000 total; $115,000 allocated to Neuromatch) — Supports workshops, scholar-led projects, and hackathons exploring the ethical and societal implications of NeuroAI. Developed in partnership with the Institute of Neuroethics, the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA), and the Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society at Georgia Tech.
  • NeuroAI: Intelligence in Brains and Machines High School Course ($180,000 total; $95,000 allocated to Neuromatch) — A high school program developed in partnership with ARNI.
  • Pending Applications: One application is currently pending for a Civic Science Fellow who would work directly with our AI Sentience Scholars Program. We are also awaiting the outcome of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation's March Trustees meeting, where their full neuroscience portfolio is under review, to understand next steps for preparing a full proposal for the Impact Scholars Program.

Standing Reminders

  • Volunteer Comment Box: Our Volunteer Engagement & Recognition Working Group maintains a  Volunteer Comment Box  where volunteers can share thoughts, ideas, concerns, and feedback about their experience with Neuromatch.
