FAQs

Program & Participation

  • Is Participation mandatory?
No. The programm is designed to support your research, not add unnecessary burden. While we strongly encourage participation—particularly in Theory of Change workshops and cohort activities—engagement is flexible and intended to provide value to your team.
  • How much time should we expect this program to require?
It will vary depending on your level of engagement, but we've designed the program to complement your research rather than compete with it. Most activities are optional, and we'll aim to provide plenty of notice for workshops and events.
  • Can multiple members of our team attend?
Absolutely. We encourage participation from across your team. Some activities may be particularly relevant for PIs, project managers, or ECRs, but in general all team members are welcome.
  • How will you measure success?
We hope to see stronger connections across the cohort, clearer pathways to impact through Theory of Change, increased readiness for translation and implementation, new collaborations, and ultimately greater real-world impact from the funded research.

Theory of Change

  • What is a Theory of Change?
A Theory of Change is a structured way of describing how your research is expected to lead to real-world impact. It maps the pathway from your research activities to outputs, outcomes and longer-term changes, while making explicit the assumptions and conditions needed for that change to happen.
  • Is this part of Wellcome reporting?
The Theory of Change is a core component of the Funded Cohort Program and complements Wellcome's existing progress reporting. Rather than creating a separate reporting requirement, it provides a structured way to think about how your research could lead to real-world impact, helping you articulate pathways to translation, implementation, and broader societal benefit. It also helps us evaluate the impact of the program across the portfolio.

Global Convening

  • Where will it be?
We're still planning the event, so we'll share the location and dates as soon as they're confirmed.
  • Will travel be funded?
Yes. The program will fully fund attendance at the Global Convening for at least two members from each funded team. We'll share further details on the venue, travel arrangements, and logistics in advance of the event.
