Neuromatch Staff Onsite

In August, staff and three members of our board met in Oxford, UK for a strategic planning session. The group spent time reflecting on Neuromatch's direction and priorities, and discussing how we can continue to grow our impact in the years ahead.
In the coming weeks, we will have more to share with all of you!

General Updates

AISS Program: This is a 6-month, part-time, fully remote mentored research program for 10 early-career researchers. The program brings together researchers working at the intersection of AI, consciousness, and society, combining mentored research projects, workshops, seminars, an in-person convening, publication opportunities, and a stipend with research funding.

We are also running a  public seminar series.  In August, we hosted a session on  emerging questions in AI welfare  with Winnie Street and Geoff Keeling from Google Research. Please join #ai-sentience-scolars program if you are interested in this work.
MEXA: We are currently providing programme-level support for  14 interdisciplinary teams  from around the world working across anxiety, depression and psychosis. Projects span digital mental health, clinical decision support, conversational AI, implementation science, evaluation, measurement, and culturally adapted interventions.
Impact Scholars Program: In August, we opened up the ISP applications and are excited to see them coming in. We started onboarding and  training volunteers who have signed up to support the application reviews  with a provided rubric. Everyone is excited to get started! Conferences: In November, Neuromatch will have a booth at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN). We're looking forward to connecting with our community in person and introducing our programs to new audiences — mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details as each event approaches!
Volunteer Engagement Survey & Mailing Address Submission: The Volunteer Engagement Working Group is finalizing the annual volunteer survey for 2026. You can expect the survey to be sent out in the next week. In addition, this year, we will be mailing a small token of our appreciation to all volunteers who provide us with their mailing address (whether you fill out the survey or not!). Please fill out the form when it's sent!

Academy updates

In August, we've been holding wrap-up meetings with each department to reflect and learn what we can improve in the future. So far, one of the biggest themes is improving cross-department communication and collaboration. We'll definitely be working on this for next year.
We will dig into all our Academy data in September and be sharing the results widely!
Neuromatch store
This year's Academy Art Contest winner and the three runner-up designs have been added to our store, available across t-shirts, hoodies, stickers, tote bags, and mugs. The store is set up as a nonprofit; we don't make any money from it, it exists purely to support community building and celebrate Academy contests.  Learn more about their inspiration for their designs .
New Neuromatch Computational Behaviour Course: We have almost finalized our initial Course Creation Committee, we will be following up to set our first meeting in the coming weeks. We will also follow up with all our other interested volunteers! There will be many ways for folks to support the course once we develop a clearer curriculum roadmap.
NeuroAI for High Schoolers: This month we are focused on hiring our Curriculum Specialist for NeuroAI for High School and the Teaching Fellow that will be working along side them.

Fundraising

We've set up an account on the  Benevity  platform.  Here's our page  and the  general support project . Check to see if your workplace uses Benevity as a corporate giving platform!

Pending Applications:
  • Survival and Flourishing Fund (SFF): $1,000,000 over two years (Fairness Track) for unrestricted funding to support core organisational infrastructure and the expansion of key program initiatives.
  • Dana pilot proposal on NeuroAI & Society: After some discussions with Dana for feedback on this proposal, Dana have been in touch this week to let us know they'll be recommending Neuromatch's Ethics and Society proposal for inclusion in the October Board of Directors meeting! They may not be able to fund the full amount ($183,400) this year, but should be able to get close. We'll have a further update from them in a week or two.
In Conversation/Drafting:
  • Allen Institute: In talks with senior leadership about regular funding support for the Academy and Impact Scholars program, and how to strengthen our partnership with Allen, including using more of Allen's data in our programming.
  • AWS Imagine Grant (Momentum to Modernize): Up to $50,000 in unrestricted financial support and up to $20,000 in AWS Promotional Credit. We are planning to submit an application to help us modernise our portal, including using it for better long-term impact tracking of our alumni.
  • Longview Philanthropy: Digital Minds RFP for an expansion of the AI Sentience Scholars Program
  • Google DeepMind Sponsorship: $25,000 to support the delivery of Neuromatch Academy

Financial Snapshot

  • Financial Runway: As of 31 July 2026, Neuromatch Inc. held $1,285,748 in the bank. Based on current projections and not accounting for pending or future fundraising, Neuromatch will exhaust available and committed funds in February 2028. This provides a conservative financial runway of approximately 19 months.
