Scholars Eligibility Criteria
1. Requirements
The program recruits a small, selective cohort (~8–10 scholars).
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
Early-career researchers (Master’s level to early postdoc).
For applicants who have completed a PhD, eligibility is typically limited to within 7 years of the PhD award. Career breaks (maternity/paternity leave, long-term sick leave, caregiving responsibilities, mandatory military service) are taken into account and may extend this window.
Background in AI / computer science, cognitive science, neuroscience, philosophy, ethics, or related fields
Skills aligned with the selected curated project
Interest in AI sentience, consciousness, ethics, or governance
2. Time Commitment
Scholars must commit a minimum of 8 hours per week for ~6 months.
This includes:
Independent research work
Regular mentor meetings (weekly or bi-weekly)
Participation in program activities, such as workshops and seminars
Contribution to program outputs
Participation Reliability
Because this is a small and mentored cohort, reliable engagement is critical. All applicants should ensure they can reliably meet this commitment alongside their other responsibilities. Scholars are expected to attend scheduled activities, maintain regular communication with mentors, and participate in program check-ins. Consistent participation will be formalised through a Commitment Charter at onboarding.
3. Application Process
Applicants will be asked to submit:
CV
Letter of Support (optional but encouraged)
Background information relevant to research areas
Motivation statements describing:
Why they are interested in the AI Sentience Scholars Program
Project Fit: How their skills and experiences make them a strong fit for their selected project(s)
